Self Help Products

Self Help Products

Self help products run the gamut of human imagination. For example, if you go to the e-book aggregator Clickbank, there are hundreds if not thousands of e-books written prescribing a Rx to deal with every imaginable human condition or issue.

For me, in the counseling and education field, self help usually means things like the 12 step programs or massage or cranial sacral work or breathwork or bibliotherapy, or the study of Chi Gong, which is a wonderful study.

You will notice that what I call self help is the kind of self help that is ongoing. It is not a quick fix, but a study, a discipline.

I guess bibliotherapy could apply to Clickbank, right?

Actually in the mid-1990's I read a book by Michael Hutchison or Hutchinson called Mega-Brain, which talked about the uses of a number of tools like brain wave or EEG Biofeedback for issues like addiction.

Hutchison also spoke to Cranial Electrical Stimulation, Open Focus, Sensory Deprivation, and other non-medical tools for wellness.

I did a training for the Sigfried and Sue Othmer model of EEG biofeedback and I and my partner Jeremy Croyle had great success using it with addictions folks, and now the technology has made a number of what were very cumbersome tools very easy for the lay person to use for themselves.

For example, look at what is available from the Transparent Corporation by clicking the link below.

In the ensuing years, we have come a long way in terms of self help products, because of technological advances like fMRI which gives us a way to peer into the human brain.

Self help tools are based on a depth of knowledge unavailable prior to the 1990's, and only just now becoming available in products, like computerized brain fitness programs designed to enhance neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

No one knew that the human brain grows new brain cells every day until a few years ago, (neurogenesis) and no one knew how plastic the human neuron is, constantly seeking new effective connections with neighboring neurons. Those connections form networks in the brain and those networks are key to those 'AHA' moments we have.

No one knew those two capacities of the human brain could be enhanced, and if you are using the dual n back task of the Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro, you are going to increase your IQ.

Here are links to very important brain fitness programs which impact the location in the universe where you do your thinking, decision making, and problem evaluation.

As Dr. Daniel Amen says, "When it comes to brains, size matters", so make yours bigger.

If you want to survey a very interesting self help product about brain fitness, then I suggest you read Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans,Ph.D. or Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. who are neuroscientists from the University of Michigan who have culled the research on neuroscience for brain fitness nuggets we can use in our daily life to enhance brain fitness, which I think is the best self help of all.

I have interviewed Professor Evans on Blog Talk Radio and he said that he likes the Lumosity program, and their book mentions the research that the Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro utilizes.

I do like to have conversations with experts in the field before I spend my dollars on products. If the experts indicate the product has value I am more prone to try it out.

I do like the impact of HeartMath too, for me personally and for my clients.
