A self help brain is probably an aware brain, and is a brain seeking solutions of some kind.
Perhaps that brain wants an increased income, less depression, lower weight, less anxiety, or a better physique, better stress management, anger management, or even an increased IQ.
Is it possible to increase your IQ? As of this moment in time, the answer is yes, and there is a computerized brain fitness program to practice which will take you to a higher IQ.
How much time do you have to put in? About 1/2 hour per day for the first 19 days, then you practice as you choose.
But I am getting a bit ahead of myself.
Any self help program is going to work in your brain first, so it makes sense to take care of your brain's capacity for neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, which are capacities of the human brain which were unknown not to many years ago.
Neurogenesis means that your brain grows new brain cells every day, and neuroplasticity means that the neurons in your brain are begging you for new information, challenging information, so that they can form new connections to bring to bear on self help issues. Your neurons are constantly seeking new sights, sounds, smells, touches, and tastes to process.
Both of those capacities, if maximized, make self help all the more valuable.
The first thing to do is to get the big picture of brain fitness, and an excellent resource is Brainfit for Life written by Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. who are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan.
Their book is written in easy to understand, lay person English, and address what they call the pillars of brain fitness for the self help brain, and those pillars are, physical exercise, nutrition, including omega 3 fatty acids, sleep, stress management, and novel learning experiences.
Physical activity/exercise is the most important factor in brain fitness, and the good news is it does not have to involve expensive gym memberships or trainers or even too much sweat, but it does need to involve deep breathing.
I really enjoy the HIIT model that Angie and Scott Tousignant have put together for couples, called More Love, Less Fat Their model is perfectly suited to my basement utility room, where I can do the 30 second intervals of calisthenics at my pace and abiltiy for ten minute workouts daily or twice daily.
Please check out The Aesthetic Muscle Plan, and book, More Love, Less Fat, by Angie and Scott Tousignant.
My equipment need be no more sophisticated than an execise ball and dumbells.
That workout will get your brain's neurogenesis and neuroplasticity going, unless you put too many stress hormones or other poisons in your brain.
Your workout will help you manage stress but a tool like the HeartMath emWave will truely keep the inside of your body filled up with anti aging hormones like DHEA, which makes your self help brain more effective.
I have used the HeartMath tool since 2001 both personally and professionally, and I recommend it highly. It is part of the self help I am doing to keep my brain aging effectively.
Brainfit for Life goes into great detail about nutrition for the brain, including the tremendous importance of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acid.
Most of the nutrition our self help brain needs can be gotten from fruits and vegetables, except for omega 3 fatty acid, which should come from fish, which raises the spectre of mercury poisoning.
So you can get your Omega 3 fatty acids from supplements if you want, but get it from something, because without it, your neurons get brittle and do not talk clearly with one another, which means your self help experience will be less valuable.
Novel learning experiences of the neuroplastic kind usually means learning a new language, or a new instrument, or taking up a new career.
If you do not have time for any of those things, you can try out any number of computerized brain fitness programs, like Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro, which is the program that increases your IQ, or Lumosity, or the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program Classic.
All of them will are part of the self help brain package and are less expensive than learning a new language.
Very early in my personal growth experience, a wise person taught me to use the phrase "gratitude is the attitude" when I was resentful or afraid and that phrase has helped me feel better tens of thousands of times.
