Online counseling school is the way to go, for my money, as long as it is accredited.
Convenience and economy are two very important criteria for me. If I can get online to get my homework or check out a recorded or videotaped lecture at my convenience, I am very grateful.
I have been teaching an online class for folks interested in building an SBI website, and the toughest part was learning the software. The folks attending were highly motivated, ready to interact, and share great questions. One of the downsides is that not everyone is at the same place in terms of computer experience.
Benefits of Online Education
There are so many benefits to online education.
The flexibility, variety and accessibility of taking courses online and acquiring online degrees is tough to match by bricks and mortar colleges.
Students are able to interact with their instructors and peers from anywhere in the world much more conveniently.
One of the benefits of online education is the accessibility of the courses. You can complete a degree program from virtually anywhere in the world, that too from some of the world’s most well-known online colleges & universities.
I routinely hammer at this for my students in my domestic violence classes, that they can look at doing their GED classes or associate classes online.
In the not too distant future, this is going to mean something very important to college administrators and faculty and legislators who will be dealing with a drop in demand for courses at college campuses.
However, the unions representing college faculties are taking positions designed to protect their members.
The variety of courses and types of programs offered is far more than traditional institutions. You can choose from an incredible diversity of subjects by taking courses and you may be able to transfer them into your online degree program. There is also a great variety when it comes to types of programs and online degree subjects to choose from when starting your online education. Loan financing is becoming available.
One of the greatest benefits of online education is that of direct communication. There are many people who would seldom, if ever, speak up in class. Whatever the reason, these students do not benefit fully from the classes they take because they are not able to participate. Online education allows anonymous-feeling communication with the instructor as well as with other students in the class. This gives them the confidence to express their opinions and ideas without revealing too much of themselves.
No matter what the class schedule is, you benefit from online education because you can take classes according to your convenience, especially if the classes are recorded.
I love being able to review lectures as needed, if they are recorded. However, I sometimes drift off when doing that, and need to back up and start over several times, so paying attention is again an important requisite.
If you could never make it in for an 8 am class due to work or if you have children and would not be able to schedule an 8 pm class, you need not worry. The classes you take are bound more by date than time. You only need to make sure to get your assignments in on time and take you exams before they expire to be able to keep up with your courses.
Considerations Before Deciding on an Online Counseling Schools-
If you are thinking about going for an online degree or online counseling school, whether it may be an online bachelor degree or even an online certificate program, review these considerations before registering at an online college or university, or paying your fees. They may help you improve your academic career and make your experience in securing an online degree better.
The goal is to look closely at your motivations. If you are choosing the online option for a perceived "easier" experience, you may be setting yourself up for a disappointment.
Perhaps it would be wise to try out an online class to see what your experience was like.
Important Considerations before Enrolling in Online Counseling Schools.
Many students do not realize just how much time the assignments take and do not plan well. Time management is one of the most important considerations before going for online degrees, or an offline degree for that matter. You need to be able to schedule time for your courses as well as the assignments and projects that must be turned in and exams. (My graduate school advisors suggested 2 hours of study time per hour of class time, which meant six hours of study per week for a three hour class).
If you do not take the work as seriously as a traditional degree program you are sure to fail in reaching your goal of attaining a degree. Enrolling in an online degree program does not mean less study; it just means studying from a place convenient to you instead of going to the bricks and mortar college.
You have to be the one who keeps up with the work and makes sure to get it done on time. There is no class day, no specific hour to be seated for your lectures. If you do not take the time out of your schedule specifically for lectures and assignments, you will fall behind in work. It is important to engage yourself in learning every day, even weekends to earn the degree on time.
If you take classes from different online programs, make sure that credits can be transferred. Some online schools use WebCT to post class information, discussion and assignments, but not all of them. You have to take time out to get to know the online class programs so that your work will be submitted on time without any trouble.
Not being in the classroom is a serious consideration before going for an online degree, because lack of physical interaction can lead to a delay in understanding. You have to be proactive in your education and this includes sending emails to the instructor, asking questions on the online forums and participating in class discussions.
As long as you keep up with the syllabus, you will be able to keep up with the classes and understand what is being taught. Sometimes, the instructor will change things in the syllabus as needed and unless you pay sufficient attention, you can fall behind in the work.
You have to know the ins and outs of computer operations. You need to be able to create and maintain files, databases, reminders, etc and not just know how to chat or open a file. Many people only know email and messenger programs but it is important to know how to scan files for viruses and even maintain your computer as without a properly working system, attaining an online degree is impossible.
Perhaps the most important thing to take into consideration before going for online degrees is that taking online courses does not mean they will be any easier than traditional classes. They can, in fact, be much more difficult.
All that being said, here are some links that will facilitate your search for an online program that fits your needs. Good luck!
Very early in my personal growth experience, a wise person taught me to use the phrase "gratitude is the attitude" when I was resentful or afraid and that phrase has helped me feel better tens of thousands of times.
