Online Counseling Programs
Need for counselors to grow significantly until 2016.
So the recession has hit your household, and things are not quite what they used to be economically for you.
You are watching the news with amazement as the federal bailout continues and the deficit grows, and you are watching the talk about how the planet is about drained of oil, and wondering about the ramifications of rising oil prices for everything you eat and wear and the house you live in.
And you decide that you would like to pursue an online counseling degree to give yourself some leverage in the workplace, because the need for counselors is going to continue to grow.
Good idea. It is possible, given technological developments that there will not be bricks and mortar college campuses, at least not like we used to have them when I was a kid.
If you were a legislator looking at difficult budget choices, I would consider cutting funding for the maintenance of bricks and mortar campuses if distance learning were feasible, and distance learning is feasible.
What kind of online counseling programs are there?
There are family counselors, marriage counselors, school counselors, substance abuse counselors and many others. These professions are almost universally education-intensive. For example, a Master of Science (MS) in Mental Health Counseling is the minimum degree required to become a mental health counselor. Doctorates are recommended for those who want to attain the most lucrative and prestigious positions in the field.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that overall demand for counselors will grow by 21% through 2016 – much faster than average when compared to all occupations. As with many health-oriented fields, counselors with top–level degrees will have an advantage when looking for work.
Can you get a top level degree online? Absolutely.
Got your brain in the best possible shape for your new online counseling degree adventure?
Perhaps you were unaware that if we take care of the pillars of brain fitness, physical exercise, nutrition including omega 3 fatty acid and antioxidants, sleep, stress management, and novel learning experiences (your counseling classes!), you grow new brain cells everyday, which is called neurogenesis.
And all that learning will maximize another of your brain's recently discovered capacities, called neuroplasticity, which is the term used to describe what neurons do when they learn. They form new connections.
Do you worry that your brain is too old or has not been attentive to text books and papers and tests for a long time?
Well, there are some excellent brain fitness tools available to channel your brain's abilities for easier studying. The one I would start with is Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro, and then I would go to Lumosity.
Very early in my personal growth experience, a wise person taught me to use the phrase "gratitude is the attitude" when I was resentful or afraid and that phrase has helped me feel better tens of thousands of times.
