Improve memory and concentration is much more scientific than it used to be, primarily because of recent discoveries like neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.
Neurogenesis is the term used to describe the capacity of your brain to grow new brain cells every day. Neuroscientific dogma for decades was that we grew our brains and brain circuits up to a certain age, and then the brain began a slow deterioration continuing throughout our lives.
That old dogma is now fallen by the wayside.
It turns out that we can encourage our brain's neurogenesis by attending to what the brain fitness counselors are calling the pillars of brain fitness, which is good news for our memory and concentration.
However, the newer memory and concentration tools are different from what we had available in the past. The tools available now are based on the concept of brain fitness, and are designed to increase newly discovered capacities of the human brain.
Neuroplasticity is the capacity or our brain to change based on what we learn. Neurons are seeking new connections, and working to build and form new circuits, so when we provide our brains with novel learning experiences, new connections are made, which help us older folks bypass alzheimers plaques.
Just like neurogenesis, neuroplasticity can be encouraged by a daily regimen of brain fitness, a workout for your brain so to speak, and when your neurons are healthy, guess what happens to your memory and concentration?
Just so you know, I have been working on the pillars of my brain fitness for about a year and one half now, so I can testify to the value of the computerized novel learning experiences like Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro, the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program, Lumosity, and supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids, for example.
Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro has been shown to increase IQ, and it has developed a very special following online.
The researchers have shown that doing the Mind Sparke one time per day for 20 days, each practice is about one half hour long, increases fluid intelligence, a key component of our intelligence needed to evaluate the flood of information coming our way in today's world.
What I like about the Mind Sparke is it has taught me to stay on task for longer periods of time. I am now aware of how quickly my mind wanders, and with that awareness I can actually switch back to task before my ADD takes me off to some other project.
Mind Sparke offers increasing levels of challenge, and appropriate levels of feedback to increase neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, increase your IQ, and improve memory and concentration.
But what is brain fitness? For an excellent explanation of brain fitness, please take a look at Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D.
They are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan, who have culled the research and gathered all their discoveries into one place for us as consumers. In other words, the book is not filled with jargon. Their idea is to provide us with information
The pillars of brain fitness are physical exercise, nutrition including lots of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acid, sleep, stress management, and the above mentioned novel learning experience, which can include those computerized brain fitness programs.
When we take care of our brain fitness, which is surprisingly easy actually, and can be part of our daily routine, we lay the ground work for improved memory and concentration at any age.
Another of the computerized brain fitness programs which I have tried and really like is the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program, which is based on the work of Michael Merzenich,Ph.D., the leading neuroplasticity researcher in the world. His work really works for us older folks and was described in the IMPACT study published in April of 2009.
The researchers and the participants were very surprised at how effective the tool was for Senior Brains, their memory, concentration, and ultimately, their confidence to handle daily tasks like driving.
A wise person once told me that an "Attitude of Gratitude" would help me feel better in those moments of fear or resentment. That wise person was correct.
Would you share what you are most grateful for?
It could be just what another person needs to renew themselves.
